Perfume Clones vs Perfume Copies

As a perfume retailer, these are two words I hear quite often, clone and copy. They refer to different types of perfumes and I thought to write a short article on them as there are definitely buyers and even retailers that don’t know what they mean and how to differentiate between a clone and a copy of a high end perfume.

Clones

Designer perfumes are high end as they are often quite pricey. Although their prices usually equates their quality, they may be out of reach to people that fancy them but are not able to afford them. This is where clones come in. Clones are perfumes that are replicas of the fragrances of high end brands but are less expensive. Companies that produce clones dissect the ingredients and different notes of a perfume and they replicate the fragrance. The bottling and packaging of these clones may look very similar to the real deal or they may not. They might even have similar names. The major difference between a clone and a copy is that clones don’t copy another perfume exactly, they are only inspired by it. With this inspiration, they produce similar scent. This creates an option for customers that like high end scents but cannot afford it. However, I have discovered that the clones of perfumes don’t have the same longevity and projection as the main one, but they can fill in for them.

Avensis is a clone of Aventus Creed, Scandant is cloned from Jean Paul Gauteir’s Scandal, Gabrielle Bloom is cloned from Gucci Bloom, Ophylia is cloned from Paco Rabanne’s Olympea and the list goes on and on. If you’ve laid your hands on any of these clones I’ve listed, you’ll understand what I mean by clones are replicas of their muse, only not as expensive.

Copies

Copies are fake imitations of designer high end perfumes. They copy everything 😂 the scent, the bottling, the name. Copies mimic the real perfume in every way, but they are the fake version. Instead of buying a copy perfume, go for a clone of it. Copies don’t last long and they’re usually way cheaper than clones. Some wholesalers and even retailers do not even stock copies as they are fake and can taint the image of your brand.
