The Psychology of Perfumes: What your Scent says about you.

Perfumes are like clothes, not only do we wear them, but each person has their style or in this case their scent profile. We tend to lean towards perfumes that appeal to our olfactory senses. In the grand scheme of things, whilst grouping the perfumes you use, it would be of no surprise that a large percentage of them fall into a particular fragrance family. The group of perfumes you use says a lot about you and can be used to hint at some of your personality traits.

It is quite common for females to opt for floral scents. Floral scents are the most common type of perfume used by women around the world and as the range of flowers available in nature are many, so are the floral notes, from roses to jasmine to carnation to lavender; the variations are endless. Floral notes can be ascribed to be worn by women that are soft, delicate and in tune with their femininity.


A man may be inclined towards fresh, cool and nature-based scents. Cool Fragrances are good for daytime and work environments as they are not so sensual or intoxicating, rather they give off fresh fragrances that highlight focus, productivity and the vigour of a new day.

Oriental fragrances on the other hand are spicy, sexy and attention-seeking! These bad boys are very good for evening wear, date nights and occasions where you want to steal the spotlight. Oriental fragrances are not gender boxes but can be used by men and women alike. The psychology of someone where an oriental perfume is that of a bold cat.

Oud perfumes are quite common in the Middle East and amongst Muslims but have been largely accepted in mainstream culture in the past years. A person wearing an oud is in my opinion daring. Oud fragrances are very distinct and cannot be second guessed or mistaken for another perfume note. It is striking and the sillage of an Oud perfume is enormous. Be rest assured a person wearing oud notes knows exactly what their perfume smells like and they are certain others can smell it too.

These theories don’t however box the respective genders in as some women don’t fancy floral scents and lean towards sweet and gourmand fragrances. Sweet fragrances aren’t totally gender bound as a few men layer sweet scents with cool or oriental scents. There is no straight out clue telling you who a person is based on their perfume, there are only trails of ideas.
