I have written this kind of article previously, titled Tales of the Fabrics in my Basket -1, read it here. Tagging it “1” signified that I wanted to write more of this sort of article. Although it has taken a little while, I am back with another article highlighting a few of the fabrics I currently have in my possession. Some are for me whilst others are for my clients. Either ways, they are canvases I will be working on.
The ideas for this theme of the article came to me one day when I imagined all the fabrics I own having individual lives, back stories and futures. Like toys coming alive at night in a toy store, these are the personalities of my fabrics.

I have grown a newfound love for Ankara prints and I enjoy working with them. These fabrics are currently in my workshop and I can’t wait to transform them into beautiful pieces. The first and second fabrics in the picture are for clients whilst the third is for me. I intend to use my for practicals in an online corset master class I am taking. Ankara comes in 6 yards (36 inches) and they have a wide variety of prints, patterns and designs. To learn more about Ankara, check out this Ankara fabric focus article here.

This next fabric is a plain white dry lace. I have it in three yards and this was given to me by a client. She intends to make a white lace A-Line dress to wear to a communion service. This type of lace is called “dry lace” in Nigeria because it isn’t so shiny, doesn’t have sequin and looks and feels dry.

This Crepe fabric is so beautiful. I bought it some time ago to make a shirt and pants for a client. I bought an extra 2-3 yards for myself seeing that I loved the vibrant color and print. I have yet to make mine and it has been lying on my shelf for a while now but hopefully, I get to dig into this month. I am excited about the style I want to make with the fabric, it’s an asymmetric neckline dress with a keyhole at the side of the waist… imagine friends, perfecto!

This fabric is my current WIP (work in progress). It is a thick stretchy kind of crepe fabric. Its colours are black and white. I am transforming it into a flare long dress with long cuff sleeves and bishop neckline and popover button placket. This dress is long and flows, about 62 inches long and it is so beautiful. I know my client will love it.

These two fabrics I used in combination on a birthday dress I made for the client’s birthday which is today, 1st October. This dress came out beautiful. I am so proud of the job I did. The dress fit her like a glove. The seams, fabric choice, colour, beading and embellishment came out top-notch. I am an incredible fashion designer, not to toot my own horn but… toot! toot!! toot!!! 🚂
