8 Mistakes Small Businesses must Avoid.

Choosing to read this article is a good decision because I go into detail on some mistakes that should be avoided if you want to flourish your small business from where it is currently to where it is meant to be. These mistakes are easily overlooked and as a business owner, you may be going about your day-to-day dealings and you are deep into these mistakes, making them habits not knowing you are losing potential clientele in the process. Read on to find out what you could be doing wrongly and how to amend it as soon as possible.

Not Knowing your Competition

To keep up with the trends in your industry and niche, you should be in the know about what your competitors are up to. It is known that getting ideas from how your competitors operate is a source of generating your ideas. Keep them in the loop, observing them with hawk eyes and trying to outdo and update them on what they are currently doing.

Constant Self-Promotion

If you have social media platforms, your audience would include your buying customers and potential future customers. You relate to them on these platforms via the images, sounds and audio you post. You shouldn’t be constantly promoting what you sell. Mix your messages with educative, informative and also fun messages. That way, your customers feel drawn to view your profile and they also become aware that you know your field, based on the educational posts you make.

Setting Unrealistic Goals

It is common knowledge that as a business owner you should set goals for your business, that way you have a plan of action that you are always working towards. However, you should be weary of setting goals that are not real or that you could even achieve if all the forces of the universe back you up. Set achievable realistic goals and you can do this using the SMART technique. Read about this technique here.

Presence on all Social Media Channels

Social media is a great way to reach new customers and to continuously keep in touch with existing customers, however as a basis owner especially a beginning one, you should be wary about spreading yourself thin on all platforms. Spreading your business on every social media platform is not a good idea; focus on channels that are relevant to your industry. Focus on 2-3 out of the thousands out there and try to grow your account reasonably on them before checking out new platforms.

Not Strategizing

You don’t just launch your business without having a thorough strategy on how to grow, expand, gain clients, and market your products or services. Take time out to come up with a well-rounded business plan. Businesses must plan initiation, implementation and execution strategies for their business activities. Not Checking for Grammatical Errors

This is a common mistake that I also fall victim to and most times I attribute this mistake to laziness and speed. Laziness to proofread and speed to get my content out. This is however a flaw and grammatical errors can taint a perfectly put together content. Whether you are writing a caption, article or sending a message, take a few seconds to read through it to find out any errors or blunders that may be lying in between. You can always ask someone else to proofread for you or you can seek the services of mobile applications designed for that purpose, like Grammarly.

Not Measuring your Efforts

When you are pushing a rock up a slope and it keeps rolling down, it’s easy to just quit because it gets frustrating and you are making no progress. It is very important to measure the efforts you put in and the result it fetches you. This is vital because you can then work out what effort is bringing you what result, if you should keep doing what it is you are doing if you are pouring into the right cup or if you should pour water at all. Measure and track the efficiency and results of all the efforts made by your brand or business

No Interaction with Customers

I’m sure you’ve heard countless times that customer is king and this statement holds so much truth as your customers are the sole greases on the wheels of your business. They hold so much power and without them, you may have the best product or services in the market and it won’t mean a thing. Establishing healthy communication and interaction with them will make for an atmosphere of close relationship and they would be drawn to your brand more. Businesses must give supreme importance to customer engagement and interaction.
