Window shopping in the dictionary is defined as looking at items displayed through the windows of shops or stores without having the intention of buying them. However, in present times has taken a broader meaning and you can walk into a store, browse through items, try them on and don’t necessarily buy them, that is still window shopping. A lot of people today find window shopping a pass time hobby as they enjoy going into their favourite high-end stores and trying out things as if they are going to buy them, but never end up buying them.
Window shopping is quite strategic on the path of the seller. The game plan is always between displaying very attractive products that cause people to stop and want to buy what they didn’t plan for or displaying affordable products that prospects can buy without feeling like they are spending so much money. This also extends to strategically displaying items that are on sale or discounted.
In the current time and age, window shopping is considered an extreme sport. It has its advantages and disadvantages. It provides an atmosphere to feed your eyes and it is particularly useful if you use it as an opportunity to take in what’s trending in the market before you decide on purchase.
Its cons are how it triggers the brain to impulse buying even if they are not things you necessarily need and this is true for fashion pieces like clothes, jewelry and accessories like shoes. Many of the pieces that are displayed are fast-fashion pieces and they loose their appeal after a couple of months or go ‘off trend’.
With clothes, having staples in your wardrobe saves you from being a victim of window shopping and its allure. Choosing to buy only items of clothing that can be styled in versatile ways and can be worn during different times and seasons is the way to go.
Who is to say that falling for the latest baggy jean you see on a mannequin at the store isn’t the way to go? Notwithstanding, it is fundamental to only buy them if they upgrade your wardrobe and can be styled in countless ways.
