Clippings from a Vlisco Magazine

My Sister has about 4-5 different editions of this magazine. She was gifted them by a friend when she was much younger, probably in primary school. This particular edition that I would be sharing clips from, she has 2 copies of. I had to beg her to give one copy to me and after so many pleading sessions, she finally agreed. I have an addiction to magazines and this is for some reasons;

  • They are books, and I love books.
  • Not only are they books, but they are colorful books with pictures of clothes, people, places and they also have wonderfully written articles.
  • They are aesthetically pleasing.

Currently, I own a few magazines and some I actually stole from hotel lobbies… oops! Don’t judge me, I really do love them.

This magazine in particular is a Vlisco magazine. Vlisco is the largest Ankara fabric producer in the world. They produce these fabrics in Holland and ship them to Africa to be distributed (Africa is the largest consumer of Ankara fabrics). They have been in business since 1846 and have continuously produced different prints, patterns, styles, colours and textures of Ankara fabric.

Its very rare to see an ankara fabric that isn’t Vlisco as they are the dominant producers. These fabrics are sometimes referred to as Hollandis and is thought to be worn by the affluent as the colors and patterns are very spectacular. Below, I have made a look book of some pages I find intriguing from the magazine, alongside a short caption of the context of the image.

This dress and fabric mix is simply exceptional.
