5 mistakes you are making with your perfumes

We all love to scent good, well majority of us. I am saying majority because some people still smell like the bottom of a garbage truck even on a Monday morning. However, whilst some don’t mind spending a bag buying expensive high end perfumes others stick to affordable ones that have good longevity and great projection.

It is common to make some mistakes with our perfumes not withstanding the price tag on the bottle. Here are some common mistakes you are making in the application, selection and storage of your bottles that you can avoid;

Mistake 1- Storing perfumes in the bathroom or shower.

When storing your perfumes, it is important to take note of the environment you keep them. Bathrooms and showers tend to have hot and humid temperatures because of frequent hot baths. This can in turn affect the the potency of your perfumes. It is advisable to store perfumes away from heat and hot temperates. The best place to keep your perfumes is in the box they came in. Some extremist even go as far as keeping theirs in a refrigerator to preserve it, whatever rocks your boat 🤷🏽‍♀️ as long as they stay in a cool place.

Mistake 2- Rubbing your wrists together after spraying them.

Our pulse points are known to hold scents for longer and maximize their potency. Subconsciously, we spritz our wrists and rub them together. This action of rubbing them breaks down the composition of some ingredients in the perfume. Instead, spritz both wrist individually and allow to dry, that way, the pores at the wrist sucks in the perfume for maximum longevity.

Mistake 3- Layering fragrances that don’t go well together.

Layering in perfumery is using two or more perfumes. After spraying one, you spray another, then another and so on. One of the main reasons people layer perfumes is to achieve a signature scent, a unique mix of their own. However, this adventure can quickly go south when the ingredients of certain perfumes don’t mix well. Ensure to run a scent test on the perfumes you want to layer together. You can ask someone else if they smell compatible together, or ask your perfumer. Personally, I advice sticking to two perfumes when layering your scents.

Mistake 4 – Using too much perfume.

This is a trap many people know too well 😂 I will like to emphasize again that with perfumes less is sometimes more. Target your pulse points when using your perfumes and you can also decide to spritz some on your clothes and you are good to go. The pulse points will activate the perfumes and enhance their scent throughout the day. Using too much perfume is a recipe for attracting bees than it is for attracting compliments.

Mistake 5 – Keeping perfumes beyond their shelf life.

The shelf life of a product is the recommended time it should be used after it has been opened without loosing its potency. Albeit, this is not the expiration date of that product. Shelf life simply states that the product might have lost some of its potency since the time it was opened. Perfumes have shelf life and as the time approaches the concentration and potency of perfumes might reduce. Preferably, buy bottle in quantities that you can go through within a certain time as you can always buy another bottle. Although, I am very aware that some people collect perfumes as some form of art or as food for their addiction. This doesn’t mean the many bottles on their shelves are expired. They only would have lost some percentage of potency especially if they are exposed to hot temperatures.
