Choosing your Signature Scent

Our noses are sharp and effective organs. Aside from taking in oxygen for the proper functioning of our bodies, they trail scents and smells. Without using any perfume or fragrance, each person has their peculiar body scent. That is why it is possible for two people to use the same perfume and still scent different. The chemistry of their body sweats, heat and fluids combine with these perfumes to give off different scents. A signature scent is the particular scent of a person, either their natural scent (without perfumes) or artificial scent (when they have used perfumes). It is quite common for you to walk into a room and be able to detect that someone you know had been there or is there because your nose senses that person’s particular scent that you have been priorly accustomed to.

In creating a signature scent (perfume-based) some people choose their favourite scents and extracts and ask a perfumer to make a composition from these scents as a perfume. For understanding, a man that likes the smell of his coffee in the morning and the smell of his leather boots may ask a perfumer to make a fragrance using the scents extracted from these two components. This perfume becomes peculiar to him, he made the scent and owns it as they may not be lots of perfumes with that particular scent. It becomes his signature scent especially if he uses it often.

Aside from formulation, you can find your signature scent by discovering a perfume that you like and one that portrays your personality. A lady may stick to sweet scents, a businessman would prefer cool fresh scents with depth, a girly teenager would want to scent fruity and a mature woman may want to go for floral or oriental scents that have sexy notes in them. These are just examples and not a laid down format, anyone can scent as they want to. After you have chosen a perfume that appeals to you the most, when you use that perfume frequently, bottle after bottle, it becomes your signature scent. Your room, clothes and belongings tend to smell like that and people will know you with that particular scent.

You can also combine perfumes to create a scent peculiar to you. This is quite common but should be done with much care as some perfumes do not combine well and can form a new scent that is offensive to the olfactory senses. You have to make sure the perfumes you choose to combine complement each other. As a rule of thumb, stick to 2 or 3 perfumes when creating a mix for your signature scent and make sure you are layering them properly.

Everyone should have their signature scent. You may like to try different perfumes like me ๐Ÿ™‚ but it is good to have a particular scent you go back to and buy again for your collection even after it finishes. Even when people scent that perfume elsewhere, they can immediately think of you. If you want to combine perfumes and you are not sure what works for you or how to layer it, stick to one or see a perfumer for advice on how to mix them.
